TRAVIS: IGNORANT AS A JACKASS OR NAIVE AS A BABE IN THE WOOD

In the House of Assembly on Wednesday 25 June, the MP for Bain and Grants Town Travis Robinson was the batter up.  We keep saying that there is a tide in the affairs of men which when taken at the flood leads to fortune. It’s Shakespearean and the fate of Mr. Robinson in the last few weeks had all the makings of a Shakespearean comedy or tragedy.  It would depend on him. The question was could he turn what seemed a bad outturn into an opportunity and thereby launch himself into another plain?  The eyes of the country were on

TRAVIS ROBINSON GETS A LESSON IN CIVICS

Hubert Minnis, the Prime Minister, fired his poster boy for youth Travis Robinson. One year after putting Mr. Robinson forward as the future of the FNM and as an example of how unlike the PLP the FNM listened to young people, Mr. Minnis dumped mud all over the poster boy.  Mr. Robinson put a brave face on it and headed into his constituency where he was given a hero’s welcome. That’s all well and good but it is very much  like when you cut a  chicken’s head off, it still runs around until the energy left in the body dissipates.

FRANKIE CAMPBELL ONE SILLY ARROGANT SON OF A GUN

We want to say that Frankie Campbell is a silly arrogant son of a (word that rhymes with rich) but out of deference and respect to motherhood we won’t.  However, Frankie Campbell, the Minister of Transport is proving to be a public policy terms a great disappointment. a twit and well just plainly an idiot. You would have thought that after the mix up about his citizenship, this is a fellow who would sit small but he has taken on the role of the protector of the Prime Minister and having two passports, and in that role he tried to

PETER TURNQUEST ENDS ON A SOUR NOTE

When you form a government, everyone is supposed to be singing from the same hymn sheet. The music is supposed to be in time and everyone on the same note. That is the way the Government has credibility.  If it sounds like a choir and the chorus is concordant then the country may be convinced that you are on the right track. Mixing all those metaphors in the first paragraph was simply to say, that if you use that as a standard to judge the performance of Peter Turnquest and the Minnis led Administration of the FNM, they are

TWO CELEBRITY SUICIDES

The Beatles, the 1960s pop group, sang a song Money Can’t Buy You Love.  It seems that it certainly does not.  This week, two American celebrities died at their own hands. The press reported that Kate Spade, a fashion designer, and Anthony Bourdain, a Chef, both committed suicide.  It is a phenomenon that is a result of mental illness, depression, something that you simply can’t deal with unless you get help like you would for a physical illness. Joan Rivers, the American Comedienne said, when her husband committed suicide that she was so angry after the death at

SOME SAGE ADVICE FOR MARLON JOHNSON FINANCIAL SEC

On Saturday 9 June, Marlon Johnson, the Financial Secretary got himself into a position where he was apologizing for what appeared to be a slight to workers in the hotel sector and to those recently dismissed by the government.  He appeared to say on television in an interview on Friday 8 June with Clint Watson of Eyewitness News that those who were fired from the government service could work as space cleaners and housemen at Bahamar. That did not sit well.  He was forced to climb down. The rules of the public service ban people at his level from getting

CHESTER COOPER TRASHES THE TURNQUEST BUDGET

We think our man Chester Cooper MP, the Deputy Leader of the PLP, did a good job in his response to the Finance Minister’s Budget debate.  Mr. Cooper said that Peter Turnquest, the Finance Minister and the FNM have a credibility gap when it comes to the budget. He said: “I wonder, Mr. Speaker, which one of them had the courage to just level with their constituents and apologize for the FNM’s hypocrisy and level with the Bahamian people that their party has no idea what they’re doing and in the absence of any sensible plan to grow the economy,

REECE CHIPMAN JOINS THE BAND OF ANTI TAX PEOPLE

Speaking in the House of Assembly in 6 June, Centreville MP Reece Chipman rubbished his own government’s tax policies. Here is what he had to say: On Vat raise to 12 per cent: ““I would like to say Centreville is not in support of a full 12 percent VAT increase as we believe it will be channeled to additional bureaucracy, leading to a tougher business model, and more hardship on the people of Centreville and the entire Bahamas.” On Gaming Taxes: ““Centreville does not believe in discriminatory policies, one for Bahamian owners and another for foreign owners, especially as it

MCALPINE TOOK A LONG TIME TO GET THERE BUT HE DID

“We told the people take the job and vote FNM. The other people told them if they vote FNM they will lose their jobs. We said it’s not so. THE PEOPLE LOSE THE JOB!” June 7th, 2018.— Frederick McAlpine MP Pineridge When Frederick McAlpine the rogue FNM MP got up to speak in the House to make his contribution to the debate on the country’s finances, it was perhaps the most anticipated of all the addressees.  While there was some thunder, there was little lightening.  He ended his address on 7 June, by telling the FNM that there was still

DEATH ON LABOUR DAY

Labour Day was supposed to be a happy day.  It is supposed to mark the culmination of the day when workers achieved the right to bargain collectively, to be represented by someone of their choice in the workplace and the coming into being of common work standards and conditions across the country.  It all started so well. Labour Day is usually a proud display for the Progressive Liberal Party.  It has been a part of the Labour Movement since its inception. The General Strike of January 1958 was led in great measure by the PLP.  Randal Fawkes was the leader

WHAT DID BRENT GIVE TO U B?

This is the 156 million dollar man.  The man whose net worth in what he said was a badly run economy by the PLP increased in five years by 100 million dollars.  Quite a haul.  He got re-elected to office after a five-year hiatus.  You had to ask yourself why would a man worth 156 million dollars want to chase after a job for 66,000 dollars per year?  He declared an annual income of 2 million dollars in his election-year declaration. Last week, we published as our Photo of The Week a picture of Sir Franklyn Wilson, the entrepreneur, and

THE FNM MOVING AGAINST MACALPINE

The flavour of the month is now Frederick McAlpine, who was elected as an FNM, but you wouldn’t know it from the way he has been talking over the past weeks.  If you took his words and placed them in the mouths of a PLP MP, you would not skip a beat or be surprised. Rev. McAlpine as he is also known, having been a successful preacher over a number of decades. Has a colourful life and past history.  He started out as a PLP, the son of the right-hand man of Kendal Nottage when he was the chief of

10 MAY TWO WAYS OF LOOKING AT THE WORLD

There are two ways of looking at the world since the 10 May 2017 under the FNM Prime Minister Hubert Minnis.  You can look at the statistics.  He says crime is won. He says, he has laid a good foundation.  His Finance Minister says that the economy is on the right track.  They claim that they have paid off the bills left by the PLP.  That means things are tracking in the right direction. But then look at those stats of the FNM’s meeting and the PLPs meeting.  One was held on the evening of the 9 May, the PLP,

COMMENT OF THE WEEK | THE GOVERNMENT FAILS AT MONTAGUE RAMP

It was like déjà vu all over again.  Senator Fred Mitchell was walking on the Montagu Ramp, the scene of his early rise to political prominence as a fighter for the rights of people way back in the 1990s. This walk took place on Wednesday 2nd May. On that day, he joined the Leader of the PLP Philip Davis on the ramp.  They both spoke to the fish and conch vendors and then had a look at the damage that was unfolding in around the Montagu Ramp.  Mr. Mitchell had helped to make sure that the market was established and

MINNIS CAUSES CONFUSION ABOUT CORRUPTION

The Prime Minister Hubert Minnis is doubling down on the nonsense that he has been spinning on a monthly basis about this nation and corruption.  He has been the subject of adverse commentary in this country since the day he was elected and decided to go down to Caricom in Grenada to tell the people of the Caribbean that his nation was corrupt.  His government did not stop there.  You know his government has been arresting and harassing his political opponents in the PLP since he got to office, actually bringing three former PLP politicians to court on charges

A SLAVE HOB NOBS WITH THE QUEEN

Thursday 19 April 2018 The trip to London to see the Queen was just the best example of what big friggin phonies that the Prime Minster Hubert Minnis and his colleagues are.  They campaigned on not travelling saying that the PLP travelled too much.  Mr. Minnis took 31 people with him including his wife, the wife of some of his aides.  The lists seemed endless.  The cost of hotel rooms 150,000 dollars.  They had a grand old time. The other thing that the photo shows is that anyone can get to see the Queen. All you have to do is

DUANE SANDS CAN’T SEEM TO GET OVER CORNED BEEF

It is a point of amusement in PLP circles that Dr. Duane Sands, the hapless Minister of Health, is still running on about how Bahamians shouldn’t be eating corned beef.  The PLP got him off course as he was trying to explain that he intended to use the price control mechanism, to get people to stop eating corned beef.  What a stupid suggestion?  His colleagues must have told him about it.  Ever since he has been on the radio and TV talking about corned beef.  His colleague the Deputy Prime Minister tried to help him out when he was opening

THE FNM WALLOWS IN INCOMPETENCE

(THE STORY OF CORNED BEEF) To show you how lost the FNM and its leaders are, when faced with the bad news poll about their ratings in the country after one year, the Minister of Education Jeffery Lloyd said that the FNM was doing a phenomenal job.  Ha! Ha!  He actually said that. Let’s see what the Opposition Leader Philip Davis had to say about the state of FNM governance when he responded to Peter Turnquest attacking the Opposition on finance issues: “In real human terms, what does the FNM have to show for 1.7 billion dollars in borrowing? THE BI POLAR MAKE UP OF THE FNM

The FNM is in complete disarray; that much is clear. You cannot figure out what they are going to do next or for that matter what is going to come out of their mouths. DOES BRENT SYMONETTE KNOW WHAT HE IS DOING?

The Minister for Immigration Brent Symonette was busy as the devil in the House of Assembly as he spoked in the interminable and wasteful midyear budget debate. It would give them it appears a right to permanent residence with the right to work. You have to ask yourself if these people know what they are doing or are

PETER TURNQUEST A USELESS BEAN COUNTER

(SOULESS AS A DEAD FISH) The joys of Bahamian democracy: one day you are a bean counter for a three aircraft company flying domestic routes in The Bahamas, the next day you are the Finance Minister for a nation with a 2 billion dollar or so budget. Some people take to it like a fish to water, others are simply lost and get too grand and take on a personality like you’ve never seen. Peter Turnquest, the Minister of Finance of The Bahamas falls into that category, the latter one. You cannot believe that this pompous silly, soulless individual who

THE RBC MAN IS GONE THANKS TO BRAVE

THE SPEAKER STANDS CONDEMNED

A fitting addition to the photo above from The Tribune of Halson Moultrie at work in the House of Assembly would be a noose. There should have been a hangman’s noose and a trap door below and the PLP should have had a lever to pull and drop the floor. The FNM pulled a fast one, a Parliamentary trick and sleight of hand and voted to have confidence in the Speaker. In doing so they failed to address all the nasty perverted things that he said.  He called the Chairman of the PLP perverted and a reprobate but the real

THE SOFT POWDER PUFF SPEAKER ACTS LIKE A CRAZY MAN

What happened last week was a good week for the Opposition Progressive Liberal Party.  They pushed the FNM with their 35 seat majority into doing something which was disproportionate to the remedy required. They expelled not only Glenys Hanna Martin MP from the House which they had done the week before but expelled all the rest.  So the entire PLP delegation in the House is unrepresented. This was done by the same Speaker Halson Moultrie who was marching in the streets for transparency and accountability.  What he did was foolish.  The Leader of the Opposition called him a buffoon.  That

ROYAL BANK MAN CALLS BAHAMIANS DUMB

The Royal Bank of Canada has for the second year in a row had a speaker come to the Royal Fidelity Bahamas Economic Outlook Luncheon and trashed The Bahamas and its reputation, a country in which it has made billions of dollars of profits in the 110 years or so that it has been doing business here.  The Bank will no doubt say what it said the last time the lady from Trinidad came and trashed the country’s government saying it was incompetent.  They will say, the person was speaking for himself and not the Bank.  It is a distinction
