STATEMENT FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE PLP
OPPOSITION SPOKESMAN ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS
SENATOR FRED MITCHELL
On The Prime Minister’s Letter On Venezuela
6 February 2019

The public may recall that on 24th January 2019 the PLP issued a statement decrying the decision of The Bahamas Government to intervene in the internal affairs of Venezuela by reaching into that country and recognizing the Leader of the Opposition there as the Head of the Government.

There was a studied silence from the Government in response to our statement, even as it became clear that the Government had broken with the CARICOM consensus on the matter.

Now the PLP has learned that the Prime Minister has written a letter to the Secretary General of CARICOM in response to the invitation of the Secretary General to attend a special conference of neutral parties in the Organization of American States in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The Prime Minister said in the letter the following: “The Bahamas remains formally committed to the principles of non intervention, peaceful dialogue, pacific resolution of disputes, democracy, the rule of law and the protection of human right”

It appears that our foreign policy under the FNM is mixed up like conch salad. On the one the hand, we interfere with the internal affairs of another country and now we say we don’t believe in doing so.
What a pathetic state of affairs.
