GLENYS HANNA MARTIN SAYS SHE WON’T CHALLENGE BRAVE

Englerston MP Glenys Hanna-Martin confirmed that she will not challenge Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Leader Philip Brave Davis at the PLP’s May convention.

Davis and Hanna-Martin were the only two Cabinet ministers in the Christie administration who held onto their seats in the last election.

Speaking with The Nassau Guardian, Hanna-Martin said, “My, and the focus of our leadership, is not on internal contest or division but in fortifying the organization and its arms and branches nationwide. We are a unified force with a unified objective under the leadership of Philip Davis.

“We do so because we face a dire circumstance created by this administration which is proving to be incompetent, duplicitous and harmful to our national progress. Our convention will be an extension of this unity of purpose.”

When Hanna-Martin challenged Davis for the leadership at the party’s convention in October 2017, she was defeated.

Davis received 1,004 votes to Hanna-Martin’s 300.

It was the first time in 20 years that PLPs voted in a new leader.

Following the defeat, Hanna-Martin said the leadership race did not leave her disappointed, but inspired.

The PLP was expected to hold a convention in November 2018, but PLP Chairman Fred Mitchell has said it is postponed until May 2019.

Earlier this week, he said the party has yet to confirm a date for the convention.

“We’re trying to get a specific set of dates for May but I’m told that the venue might be an issue,” Mitchell said.

“So, we’re still trying to settle those dates now.”

It is unclear whether anyone will challenge Davis for the leadership.
