GOVERNMENT HOUSE EXPENSES

Last week we reported on this site that the Government was spending some 35,000 dollars in Lyford Cay to house the Governor General C A Smith. Mr. Smith cannot move into the house because it is not fit for habitation. The Last Governor General Dame Marguerite Pindling used the house only for ceremonial occasions and actually stayed in the House on three nights during her nearly five year tenure. She tried to get the place fixed including a leaking roof. Nothing happened. The FNM Government knew that Dame Marguerite was leaving one year ago, yet they did nothing to repair the house which she was not living in. Now they are defending paying 9,000 dollars per month putting up the Governor General in Port New Providence at a luxury home while it will take one year to fix Government House.
