The Day Of The Girl Child At The Senate

Senate President Kay Forbes Smith and other women in the Senate, the Minister for Gender Affairs Frankie Campbell together with the Opposition Senators Clay Sweeting and Michael Darville spoke in the Senate on Thursday 11 October to the issue of International Day of the Girl Child, so determined by the United Nations.  Michelle Obama, the wife of the former U S President, spoke to the issue on U S National Television.  While all those who spoke, spoke up and waxed eloquent about rights of women and the right of girl children to participate fully in the civic life of their countries, the facts on the ground in The Bahamas show otherwise.  Some 18,000 more women registered to vote in the 2012 general election.  Yet when put to the test of whether women should have equal rights in the society the voted no.  It’s hard to have sympathy for them when they themselves have voted in favour of continued discrimination.
