A DICKENSEAN MOMENT FOR FRED MITCHELL

by editor editor October 11, 2026

The following post appeared on Facebook Fred Mitchell Minute by Minute on Friday 9 October 2026:

So here’s the story like something out of a Dickens novel: I went to Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio the fall of 1970. My room mate was Marc Levinson. I have not seen him since I would guess December 1970 or heard of him. Turns out he’s an economist and a successful journalist. Written three books now retired in Washington D C. He and I used to do the newscast on WYSO, the school’s radio station. Fast forward to today when I met Mike Sykes, the new political officer for the US embassy in Nassau. He is a friend of Marc and told Marc that he was moving to work in Nassau. Marc told him he knew a Bahamian Fred Mitchell and he inscribed his latest book The Box and presented it to him as a gift for me which gift was duly delivered at the U S Ambassador’s home today. Footnote: Dave Chapelle, the comedian, is the son of one of the Professors at Antioch whose name was Bill Chapelle. Same sense of humour. Dave has invested heavily in the town of Yellow Springs including a refurbished WYSO that is now part of the National Public Radio network. When I saw the story about WYSO, I wrote the now director to tell him that I planned to visit the Bahamian students at the Central State University just 9 miles away from Antioch. He invited me to stop by when I’m in the area. Maybe Marc might join me. We used to do the newscast on WYSO when we were students. I think that’s a nice story.
