DIPLOMACY IS NOT GENERALLY PLAYED OUT IN PUBLIC

The more things change, the more they remain the same. This is the lesson of history so it shouldn’t be.

Last week, the United States Ambassador Hershel Walker, the first to be in place here for 11 years, entered the fray in The Bahamas to denounce The Bahamas government and claimed that the government by seeking a clarification on the work of the Drug Enforcement Agents in The Bahamas without the permission of the government of The Bahamas, replayed the history of what had happened here before.

In the 1980s. the United States accused the government of The Bahamas of allowing The Bahamas to be used as a drug transshipment centre. Drug agents of the United States even tried to kidnap a Bahamian minister on the high seas by luring him out on a boat.  This was stopped by the then U S Ambassador Lev Dobriansky.

Then there was Richard Blankenship, a U S Ambassador who ambushed the government of The Bahamas by accusing them of facilitating the loss of drugs that had been interdicted with the help of the United States and allegedly disappeared once it reached the shores of New Providence. This was dropped on The Bahamas in an open meeting without any notice.

Here we go again then. The Ambassador to The Bahamas is now interjecting in Bahamian affairs, making unsubstantiated allegations in the public domain, knowing that this will cause a political affect, but caring not who, how or when and then claiming to be our friend.

To quote Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding that is not what friends are for.
