Slash and Burn was a method used on a farm on the family Islands in a bygone era

FELIX SANDS WRITES FROM GRAND BAHAMA

Setting the fields on fire was a method of farming that was passed down from generations at the time it worked for subsistence farming but, its yields were less than favorable. That method of farming caused more harm than good and it was destructive. Today, because new methods and techniques have been developed, there is more production with less land. This is the circle of life: we learn and improve with time.

May 12th, 2026, the opposition Free National Movement using a strategy of Slash and Burn suffered a devastating defeat. When it was over the gain was only one additional seat. The Slash and Burn method didn’t work either in the other two subsequent bye elections defeat. In an effort to dislodge the Davis Administration the Free National Movement under its present leadership, slashed and burned every thing in its path, including the good name of our country. The message was soundly rejected. All of this done in an attempt to gain power.

On Wednesday past, two bills were before parliament for debate: an Anti money laundering amendment, and a resolution on Grand Bahama Power.

All opposition members with the exception of Pintard and Thompson pivoted away from the destructive approach of slash and burn, it took on a new approach to constructive opposition. Sadly, Mr. Pintard and Mr. Thompson, both representing Grand Bahama, continued on the Slash and Burn road of bad mouthing the country and its institutions.

Gentleman, figures do not lie. The people who do the math are highly seasoned technocrats, professionals serving the government of the day whether PLP or FNM. The rating agencies are headed by highly skilled professionals, so why Telegraph to the world that the success they see in our finances is a mirage. How does this profits The FNM.

The final point to Mr. Pintard and Mr.Thompson is they should be the last people to speak on purchasing anything. They both sat in a cabinet that foolishly allowed investors to walk away from their obligations, laughing all the way to the bank with insurance money, and leaving the Bahamian people saddled with a hotel and Airport bill.

The final point is, Haiti stands on the verge of being a failed state. Have you ever heard a Haitian or its descendants speak ill of Haiti? If you love your country, stop bad mouthing it? And to think you inspire to lead the Bahamas one day.
Think about it!

Felix Sands
