THE SO CALLED SPY BILL DEBATED—FNM HYPOCRISY

Photo of the Leader of the Opposition 25 April in the House of Assembly by Peter Ramsay of the Bahamas Information Services.

The PLP’s Leader Philip Davis led the PLP to vote against the so called Spy Bill which was brought by the FNM Government after opposing it in Opposition.  The Leader accused the FNM of hypocrisy.  However, the PLP opposed the Bill because he said that the bill does not do what the Privy Council asked it to do and correct.  The reason the PLP brought the bill was to deal with the regime for approving the interception of the private communications of citizens.  It would have required the input of a Judge of the court.  This FNM bill retains the current position where the Police Commissioner and the Attorney General alone can authorize a wiretap. The House met on Wednesday 25 April.
