Civil Servants Not Paid

Hundreds of Bahamas Public Services Union (BPSU) members march through the streets of Downtown  on 22 August 2019 Avhia Campbell photo

Last week on Tuesday 27 August 2019, the Bahamas Public Service Union accepted an offer of the Cabinet to pay them 1400 dollars, 800 on at the end of August which was Friday 30th August 2019 and the balance in the December pay period of 2019. The agreement only covers those in the BPSU bargaining unit plus the police and the Defence Force. It does not over Immigration and Customs officers and teachers who all have their own unions and bargaining agreement. As of Friday 31st August 2019, the Treasury could not get themselves organized to make the payment. The Union says that the Government now promises the payment by the latest on Tuesday 3rd September 2019.  Well next thing you know, they will say storm is travelling so they couldn’t make that deadline either.
