ARE WE DESENSITIZED ON THE ISSUE OF POWER SUPPLY?

In the past week, the power has been going on and off, on and off. It does not seem to be getting better. The public is getting pissed off and some of the pundits within the PLP are even suggesting that this early in the term, we should not be running into this kind of problem. The Minister JoBeth Coleby Davis has been trying her best to defend what is happening but the public is so fed up, the impact is blunted. The fact is the power is off, the country is boiling hot and the officials at BPL and the grid company just can’t seem to fix it. There are lots of reasons and excuses why this or that is not working. Some are suggesting emergency solutions like importing folks from China, the Caribbean or the US and simply descending on the place and fixing the power issues. The public has lost confidence in the ability of our own people to fix the problems. Not so this column. We think that as time goes on, public officials themselves get desensitized to the nuisance that this causes and perhaps we ought to re-sensitize ourselves to the discomfort and disruption, and economic damage this is causing. The PLP is seeking a third term in office and the damage from this must be contained and the only way it can be contained is by fixing the issue.
